Crossfaith - Apocalyze (06/09/2013)
I can almost guarantee that unless you're a devoted follower of Japanese electro-mosh-metalcore music, you'll have probably never heard anything quite like Crossfaith before.
Actually, come to think of it, before this year, I didn't even know Crossfaith existed.
They made their debut Australian appearances with Soundwave Festival earlier in 2013, where their electrifying set was by all accounts gathered, a unique, groundbreaking, and welcome presence at the festival.
Returning for round two in October with Bring Me The Horizon and Of Mice & Men, they're set to melt our collective faces all over again, but this time they'll have material from their third long player, Apocalyze.
On their home turf of Japan, Crossfaith are considered groundbreaking, and it's not hard to see why.
Like Slipknot before them (who also happen to be an influence of theirs), Crossfaith meld music styles and blend genres into a style of music that seems to transcend all others in comparison, and actually bring something fresh and original to a music scene that hasn't seen anything too remarkable over the past year.
Frontman Koie Kenta and keyboardist Tamano Terufumi share vocal duties, with the latter providing the screams throughout the release. Eclipse is a defining moment on the album. With its hard hitting combinations of clean and screaming vocals intertwined with synths, it's reminiscent of the work Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.
From the electro ballads, sharp riffs, death growls, turntable scratches; wait, holy shit, there's even some Skrillexesque (Note to self: patent that word…) dub-step drops in We Are The Future, it's clear that Crossfaith are prodigies, and masters of their craft.
Crossfaith take their musical intellect and understanding of varying musical styles, and expertly blend them into one genre-defying masterpiece. There's a chance Apocalyze may go unnoticed by many this year, but for those who seek it out (and I urge you to), you'll be treated to one of this 2013's finest.
