Boyce Avenue, Fatai @ The Enmore Theatre, Sydney (06/09/2014)
Playing a sold out show at The Enmore Theatre the night’s main act have built a career off a loyal and ever-growing fan base from the internet. Without a doubt, they’re the largest musical presence that has come from YouTube and in that brings mixed feelings about seeing them in a live setting. With support from Melbourne based Fatai, who is also quite prominent on the web, it was uncertain if people, who usually see these performers on the screen, would connect with them in a live setting.
Though, this was only a question that could be answered at the very end of the gig. Boasting a quirky personality, the young songstress Fatai welcomed many hopeful fans as they entered the venue. This doo wop inspired artist, laced each number with so many trills and dips it was if we were on a vocal rollercoaster as her set progressed. Covering Diamonds by Rihanna, she executed this perfectly and showed off some impressive mute guitar playing as well. |
Not limiting herself to the music of other artist, Fatai dipped into some original numbers. Concrete Love displayed a very mature side to this playful artist. The overall tone and composition of the song was impressive for someone of her age in the musical scene. We didn’t get a lot of original pieces from this performance. But the slight offering that was presented revealed great potential for this solo artist.
Professing her final number as her love song, Fatai finished with a soft rendition of Matt Corby’s Brother. Bringing her own style into the mix, the song was met with great satisfaction from the crowd as they grooved along from start to finish.
Now Boyce Avenue currently have over 6 million subscribers on YouTube and are known primarily for their covers of various hits across different musical genres. If anyone who attended the show was expecting a karaoke bonanza then unfortunately they would be disappointed on that front. Fortunately what was received was a display of raw musical talent that removed the shackles of their online persona.
Launching straight into the show, the three brothers who make up a majority of the band displayed a natural chemistry that invited you into the fun they were having. With a set that mixed the better part of the numerous numbers of covers and a few original pieces, there was no problem with substance to engage the crowd for the night.
Looking at the show based on the reception of what was played; Locked Out Of Heaven which is originally performed by Bruno Mars drew the most out of the crowd. Everyone was shaking their hips as the boys grooved on stage and really lifted the atmosphere of the night. Incidentally though, Because Of You (an early hit from Ne-Yo) won the hearts of all the ladies that night. I’m not too sure if it’s the content of the song or Alejandro Manzano's charm but without a doubt it was a definite heart warmer.
Not forgetting to remind the audience that they are not a cover band, they played a few original pieces including their very first song Finally. These tracks all have a much fuller sound than what most people would witness if they only followed this exceptional band online.
Another stand out number was an original played during the encore, Broken Angel deals with dark themes that don’t usually arise in public settings but with the softness of Alejandro’s voice it was a piercing number that really connected on a more emotive level than any other song of the night.
Finally to end the night, we come to Use Somebody which was completely revamped from the Kings of Leon original. A much more upbeat number, it invited everyone to let loose and really immerse themselves in the music.
Sadly, this marked the end of our time with the talented members of Boyce Avenue. It was an amazing experience to see three strong bonded brothers express their love for music with everyone at the show and the genuine passion they expressed is what made the night an unforgettable experience.
