DevilDriver - Winter Kills (12/11/2013)
Groove metal band DevilDriver must love working with heavy metal producer Mark Lewis. He's now produced three of their last four albums and he also mixed and recorded their sixth studio album Winter Kills.
The album kicks off in the typical aggressive style that fans have come to love in the form of Oath of the Abyss. Dez Fafara's hard hitting vocals and in your face riff means you can't help but head bang, even if it's just a little bit before title track Winter Kills kicks in.
This song is one track that truly stands out from the rest for just being completely in your face and just when you've finished readjusting your face you get blown off your seat with the opening screams for lead single The Appetite. The sheer aggressive of this track is something that DevilDriver fans have come to know and love and this track is sure to become a crowd favourite at live shows.
It was Fafara's teenage sons who showed him the electro-rock track Sail by Awolnation and while it seems like a bizarre choice for a metal band to cover it's them we have to thank for the brilliant version that DevilDriver have included on this album. The band put their own unique metal sound into the track without altering the original too much and with the help of Mary Whitman's vocals towards the end of the song makes this one of the stand outs on the album.
The album comes to an end with a track called Back Down To The Grave which, as expected, ends the record as it started; heavy, brutal and in your face. The bond between Lewis and the band certainly shows through on this album which has been wonderfully produced and is a great listen for all fans of metal.
