Frost - Satyricon (01/03/2014)
The name Satyricon is tainted in a brutal, heavy and successful history. And it couldn't be any better! The Norwegian black metal group have gone from strength to strength never seeming to show any signs of slowing down or going easy.
Satyricon will take a place on this year's Soundwave plus some exclusive and fantastically bloody sidewaves with metal legends GWAR and we spoke with the absolutely lovely drummer of the band, Frost!
"The whole band is excited for Soundwave! Mainly because we are so happy with the new album [Satyricon] and that the material is sounding so good live too. So to bring it too Australia where we have some crazy and dedicated fans will be something truly awesome!" Frost says about the traveling festival.
As stated before, the band will be one of the supports for the no-doubt gory and messy GWAR sidewaves and Frost can't wait to get on the stage for those!
"I'm really looking forward to these shows! I think it's a really well put together package from the festival lineup and we'll hopefully be able to show what the album [Satyricon] is all about! We can do things more exact and traditional to a club show. It's great to get an opportunity to do those outside of the festival dates. It gets people to see what it's all about and Shdney and Melbourne are lucky and get to experience both!"
This will be the sophomore trip to our shores for Satyricon and Frost is only remembering the positives from their last visit in 2009.
"We enjoyed and loved every show. We were so happy to be down in Australia. There's something about the country and the vibe and the spirit of people. It's very different to where we live but easy to be around Australians. It makes the day better and easier to do your work. To be welcomed so warmly by all the bands and fans is truly an amazing thing for the band."
With Satyricon being a black metal band, one might shake their heads seeing their names next to the likes of Alkaline Trio or Mayday Parade. But we don't have to tell you that deep down, Frost is like every band member on the bill and is accepting of and excited for the diversity!
"I know that Satyricon will function well in such a setting because we bring our spirit with us and one of the core qualities of the band is that we are a conquering and that makes every stage our own. We can bring our live atmosphere to any setting. When we are on stage, it's all about us and we feel confident with that. It will be cool to play in front new and different fans and not just the hardcore followers because it's gonna be a first time for everyone. Doing these gigs, we've been introduced to bands we've never heard of before and I think that on places like a Soundwave we get to show so many people a good first impression and meeting with us."
We here at The 59th Sound don't know if you readers out there follow the music sales charts in Scandinavia, but if you're into that kind of thing, then you will no doubt have noticed that Satyricon's latest self titled album did pretty darn well scoring positions in the top 50 in five different counties. But when we asked Frost about it, rather than, leaping about and screaming, he was very humbled in his response. Whether that's English being his second language or not, you decide.
"It is a bonus. It's a final acknowledgement in that way. You release albums as a band to communicate musically. It's a sign that things are getting through and you're doing it right. We believe it is our best album to date and something we put a lot into it. So it is a rectifying thing that if people like it and buy it then you are on the right path."
"I also think it's a sign that being so attentive to detail and precise pays off. We out a lot into this record, both writing and recording. Spending hours finding the right tones to make it come alive and if you really mange to capture it, then people from all different backgrounds will appreciate it. It's a fine piece of work no matter what kind of expression it is. And we believe that Satyricon comes across to a wide range of people who are simply music lovers, open to darker and alternative sounds. People can feel the energy and the atmosphere in the album and that speaks volumes to real music appreciators."
Being a self produced record of sorts, Frost tells us how they went about it all and how it felt to be in control of the record.
"You have to some degree of control of every process to get it as YOU want it. The fortunate thing is that Satyr [vocals, production] has become a really great producer and knows the right people to assist him and give us the right kind of equipment that allows US to do it right. It feels so great to be able to take part in absolutely everything on the album from writing the music and leading the recording process. It really accentuates what we as the band wanted I suppose."
