Georgi Kay - In My Mind (29/09/2013)
Although the name Georgi Kay mightn’t mean anything to you, it’s highly likely you’ve been mistaking her songs on Triple J for that of an equally talented songstress, Sarah Blasko.
In Kay’s debut release, In My Mind, the Perth local delivers an ambient six track EP worthy of you to hum along to.
In Ipswich Kay expresses her love for horror in a song that references the Salem witch-hunts. The track is dark and broody, just the way anything linked to murder should be. And with a line like “Hunting for witches/Hunting down those bitches” how could it not be a hit?
If you substitute the over-dramatic instruments and quirky voice of Joga with Kay’s mesmerising vocals, you have yourself one hell of a Bjork cover. This is one of the darker tracks on the EP that should be listened to loud and alone in a dark room.
Aside from the title track and Triple J favourite, In My Mind, Lionheart serves as a great standout on the EP. The lyrics are well thought out, some would even say poetic, and build in just the right way to leave you wanting more. Lionheart has the perfect balance of drums, guitar and piano to ensure Kay’s voice is the champion of the song.
Although you could endlessly compare Kay to Missy Higgins and Sarah Blasko, she has a sound all of her own. And with her melodic and endearing voice will be charming listeners worldwide in no time.
