Johnny Took - DMA's (04/04/2014)
DMA’s appeared on high rotation across our airwaves somewhat overnight. Channel V and Triple J love you. What’s it like being vouched as the next big thing by the heavyweights in music media?
May seem like overnight to people but we have been chipping away at these tunes for a while now. Can't say I have really thought about it too much. We are just concentrating hard on getting our live show down and writing new tunes.
Is there a pressure associated with being thrusted into the spotlight with such high expectations?
No, excitement rather than pressure I would say.
It’s been an interesting topic of conversation in music lately that Triple J can make or break a band -- that they are responsible for the careers of our homegrown artists. You have their support but what’s your opinion on the discourse?
I don't have an opinion on this. You write music because you love it. If The songs are good enough they will find there own way to people's ears, through what ever medium
In a time in music where buzz bands come and go, what sets DMA’s apart?
Buzz bands tend not to have enough songs written before they break out into the public eye. We've started with about 50, need a lot more though.
Now, I OH YOU signed you without you ever playing a show or even releasing a track. How does this even happen?
I guess the right people heard our tunes at the right time.
Your song Delete is everywhere and I got into a conversation with a mate about the narrative of the song. When you say “Delete my baby” it could mean a myriad of different things. My mate suggested it could even be about Facebook or abortion. What’s the message of this song? And are we just thinking too much?
I believe when we listen to songs we naturally draw individual meanings. It's the beauty of music.
You have just debuted your first EP which was recorded in your share house in Newtown. How did these songs come together for your first release and are there plenty more where that came from?
The songs on the EP range over a five year period. Mason wrote 'Delete' when he was 19 and Johnny wrote 'Your Low' around that same period. We have a plethora of tunes but we had to make the EP some what cohesive. We're most excited about the songs we haven't released.
You’re playing shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in May. What can fans and curious cats alike expect from your first tour?
Loud guitars, big tunes and a laugh.
Touring means hours on the road or in the air. What would be DMA’s top 5 travelling songs?
1. War On Drugs - Your Love Is Calling My Name
2. Kurt Vile - Monkey
3. Blur - Good Song
4. Melody's Echo Chamber - Quand Vas Tu Rentrer
5. Queen Of The Stone Age - Regular John
It’s pretty popular for bands to knock out a cover or two at a show. What cover would you love to do and better yet, what wouldn’t you touch?
Cover: Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
Wouldn't touch: AOTKPTA - The Locust
