Katie Noonan - Songbook (13/04/2013)
When I was younger I heard a voice that touched my soul. It was sweet and melodic and it hit ranges I’d never heard before. That voice belonged to Katie Noonan.
The song Special Ones was my introduction to this Australian songstress when she was still with the band George and I played it on repeat for the better part of a week.
Her new album Songbook is a look back at Katie’s musical journey, a compilation of tracks that have shaped her career and hold the most significance.
According to Katie, this album is an exploration of “the last 15 years of my life. It has been really interesting going through these works and seeing my evolution as a musician; my journey from a girl to a young woman to a wife and mother”.
Songbook explores some of Katie’s more intimate moments of her loves and life. The songs are remastered over string and piano arrangements that perfectly compliment her voice. This is not where you will find pounding bass lines or electronic arrangements. The sound is as pure as her voice.
Each of the songs on the album hold a special significance, from Time, written for friends dealing with grief, to Love’s My Song For You, a tribute to then-boyfriend and now-husband Zac, and Spawn, written by a 19-year-old Katie about the loss of innocence.
The Songbook album is released with an actual song book featuring sheet music for the first time, rare photographs and stories behind the songs.
Any true fan relishes a time when they can get a glimpse into the personal life of an artist they admire. This album is compiled of songs fans have heard before but the musical compositions are different, softer, encouraging the listener to delve deeper into the songs meaning and that’s where we see the real Katie.
