McFly - Memory Lane: The Best Of McFly (12/11/2013)
McFly have been warming hearts for a number of years now with their own take on pop-rock. And as most bands do, you release a ‘best of’ album that shows not only how much you’ve progressed as musicians but also gives new fans an overall taste of your music. Memory Lane is a twenty two song best of that shows everything from the band’s newer work to their humble beginnings as a pop-punk band. But sadly, it’s kind of boring.
Nineteen out of the album’s songs are these crappy little pop tunes that never go anywhere. Party Girl and Cherry Cola are the best example to give as they outline was the bad songs are like on the album. There is some synth but not too much which is good, but the whole sound of these songs is just purely boring. Basic chord structures with pop lyrics about girls are as digestible as cotton candy; there is no substance to them. They roll along and end. It’s quite disappointing in comparison to the better songs.
Here are the good tracks: Star Girl, Love is Easy and One for the Radio. Star Girl is a little poppy but not so much that it gets boring or annoying. It has a great hook to it that gets you singing along and moving your feet. Love is Easy is also catchy as hell and fun and upbeat. But Radio takes the cake with The Starting Line influence shining through on this pop-punk infused track.
Memory Lane is by no standards a ‘best of’ and nor is it a greatest hits. With so much more energetic and diverse tracks McFly has to offer, you have to ask yourself “why choose the most generic ones?” Memory Lane is a big letdown for such an established band such as McFly who has a catalogue of rich and lively songs which seem to have been just passed along.
