The Devil Wears Prada - 8:18 (21/10/2013)
The Devil Wears Prada’s latest offering 8:18 is a very dark and interesting listen, both musically and lyrically. It showcases amazing keyboard arrangements as well as lyrics filled with great passion such as, “Every bit of everything is screaming.” You can almost hear the pain in this album.
Opening track Gloom is a bit hit and miss. It begins with an ominous tone which is a perfect invitation to this album. However, the music seems a bit too messy and disjointed. I find the lyrics to be the highlight of this track, describing disillusion and struggle. Although I would say that this is my least favourite track of the album I think it achieves its goal of introducing the tone of this album.
The rest of the album is much more melodic and in line with what you would expect from this band. Title track 8:18 is a stand out with its almost violin-like guitars. It also has a great mix of clean and rough vocals and has an overall sombre theme.
Number Eleven also has a great intro which travels from ear to ear therefore I highly recommend some headphones when listening to this track. It is definitely another highlight for me. Closing track In Heart provides a great ending to the album, contrasting slow and stripped down instrumentation with a frenzy of heavy guitars and screaming vocals. It leaves us with this great line, “And in our likeness we must join in heart.”
There’s no doubt that The Devil Wears Prada have a set a tone with this album. They have been consistent in their sound while also adding some attention-grabbing elements. The music perfectly reflects the lyrics giving the album a well-rounded feel. The Devil Wears Prada can definitely hold their heads high with their newest release.
