The Devin Townsend Project, Meshuggah, Dredg @ The Forum, Melbourne (29/02/2012)
After missing a co-headline tour with Karnivool in 2009, Dredg's first show in Melbourne was met with huge demand by their fans, with the band playing a strong set that showcased work across the catalogue. While only gracing the stage for thirty minutes, the bands set was more than impressive, hopefully garnering enough demand for them to return to Australia in headline set.
Meshuggah on the other hand, demanded the stage like the apocalypse was descending on the Forum. Brutal, intense and no doubt commanding, Meshuggah's presence could be felt even in the very back corners of the Forum, their powerful bass lines shaking the venue and converting more than a few in attendance.
How does one describe Devin Townsend? Eccentric. Demented. Egotistical. Genius. The latter actually seems the most appropriate! In what was one of the more bizarre sidewaves of the festival, Townsend took the forum on a journey into the most bizarre reaches of music, often interrupted by the bizarre Ziltoid. Townsend's legions of followers lapped up his performance, proving that their is still greatness in death metal today.
