The Evening Cast - Lake (13/04/2013)
When I listed to the first track and their first single from the E.P Knots and Bows I was pretty excited to listen to the rest of the album. It starts off with a pretty cool riff and the intertwining vocals of Joel and Rachel really work well in this song.
The next song Surprises is an upbeat indie track that works really well. It’s obvious that the band has lots of musical skill. I think some further experimentation such as an addition of an instrument like a glockenspiel would have really worked in this song.
The vocals in the verse of No Surprises didn’t really work for me. It is just too slow and high, the vocals in the chorus which are sung a little deeper and faster work a lot better.
The next couple of songs Factory and Heartbeats are a little slow and lack substance. Heartbeats sounds like a combination of Peter, Bjorn and John’s Let’s Call It Off and elevator music.
In the last track Trouble, the guitar riff and vocal track layering are really cool.
A lot of The Evening Cast’s music sounds like a lot of indie music that has come out beforehand. In the genre that they are trying to crack into the music either has to be really catchy and upbeat, or be written in a way that allows the listener to connect emotionally with the song. Unfortunately they didn’t achieve these things with Lakes, but they are a young band that has a lot of potential. If they can create some uniqueness and diversity in their music they could go really far.
