Thelma Plum - Rosie (28/05/2013)
Those of us who pay attention to Triple J Unearthed knew Thelma Plum was something special when we heard ‘Father Said’. We heard an organic sound, sung with a genuine Australian voice, and a sentiment so sweet it was irresistible. The only problem with ‘Father Said’ was its brevity, over in less than two minutes.
One hit wonder? No chance. Thankfully there was much more where that came from. Talent like Plum’s is not sporadic. The Rosie EP is breathtaking and has all the markings of a sophisticated indie-pop release.
It’s melodic and hook-laden, but its unpretentious production allows the raw vocal talent to shine. Throw in some strategic ‘f’ bombs, and Rosie is stubbornly independent while wearing its pop sensibilities on its sleeve.
Listen out for the surprisingly majestic ballad ‘Breathe In, Breathe Out’ and sweeping ‘King’ (the latter has been played on a loop in my car), which leads into a cheeky hidden track.
Rosie In a word: authentic.
